Falcon Flash August 2008

conject

Dear customers and partners,

Why do some buildings remind us of gladiola blossoms? Will the “Zoofenster” now be realized? This issue of Falcon Flash will again be showcasing various conject projects – whether in Klagenfurt, Berlin or the Czech Republic. Particularly in Eastern Europe, the construction boom shows no sign of letting up; a massive level of investment has been observed there. conject finds this so promising that a Russian website is now also available. What else is new? www.ilm-forum.com. Here you’ll find important information about the ILM. Also, be sure not to miss our latest product tips!

Kind regards, Elke Tonscheidt

Live: Visit the "Virtual Project Spaces" in Erfurt and Bremen

Falcon Flash: Virtual Project Spaces in Erfurt and Bremen

"Teamwork in the Net – Virtual Project Spaces for Architects and Engineers" is the title of a series of seminars geared primarily towards offices not yet working with “Virtual Project Spaces.” Eric Sturm, web designer and publisher of the online magazine "Internet-fuer-Architekten.de" in Berlin, presents the possibilities of Internet-based teamwork in demonstrations organized by architectural associations. In addition to the basics ("How does a "Virtual Project Space" work, what are its tasks?"), the advantages and technical requirements are to be examined. The functions of a "Virtual Project Space" will also be discussed: communication functions (incl. integration of SMS, email and fax), document and drawing management, reports and memos, and so on. The theoretical aspects of the functions will be discussed and concrete demonstrations will also be carried out as part of a live presentation. A market overview rounds off this very practice-oriented seminar.

Stefan Pichler, MAN: “I like the people and the products.”

Stefan Pichler, MAN

He is someone who really knows how to work and at the same time is also an IT expert. And he “practically grew up” at MAN Nutzfahrzeuge AG. We’re talking about Stefan Pichler, responsible at MAN for general premises administration CAFM / CAD support and a conject user since 2002. When asked why he uses conject software, Pichler answers in seven words: “I like the people and their products.” conject employees always treat their customers in a friendly, helpful and accommodating manner. And as regards the products he adds: “I need very little help here – so much can be taken care of on site.”

Stefan Pichler got to know conject when the CAFM product was still called BuiSy. In 2001 the product known today as conjectFMFacilities Management with conjectFM (CAFM) is practical, high-performance and easy-to-use software for all segments of real estate was introduced on MAN’s premises in Munich. The first larger modules were soon followed by many others. This year the information system for building cleaning was also installed based on the ILM portal. “That is also practically complete,” Pichler is happy to report. With this it is now possible to enable all employees to view the cleaning services and cycles via the web interface.

Pichler does not see one single “striking” argument in favor of conject software since, in his opinion, there are two. 1. the system’s flexibility, 2. the fact “that, after a mere 60-minute crash course, most users are already able to use the software in their division as they need to.” He feels that power users of course require more extensive training. “But here conject is also friendly and happy to help.”

Pichler recalls with a grin, “I have had been in contact with IT since my first 386; at that time I learned programming under Pascal.” Today in his private time, the IT expert is not merely found in front of his PC, rather in addition to technology he also enjoys a little bit of everything: a bit of sports, a bit of music, a bit of relaxation. Preferable with his friends. He practices Judo, cycles and goes swimming. And he can also play the keyboard. To relax, he sometimes likes to go to a spa or to his favorite vacation spot, Greece. “I like the lifestyle of hospitality and tranquility; I also try to carry this over into my work.”

He has “always” been at MAN. There he learned his working skills; he “practically grew up here, so to speak.” Whoever knows him, appreciates his sense of humor. “Entering the workforce as a certified industrial mechanic, it quickly became clear that I would never make a great metalworker. But, as someone who knows how things are done in the works and who knows IT, I soon realized what I wanted to do." Since then his tasks have changed at MAN, but he remains true to the company. Stefan Pichler – a staunch conject customer at one of the leading utility vehicle, motor and mechanical engineering companies in Europe.

… the filters of the process lists are updated automatically in conjectFMFacilities Management with conjectFM (CAFM) is practical, high-performance and easy-to-use software for all segments of real estate?

Datasets are constantly changing when several editors are making entries at the same time in conjectFMFacilities Management with conjectFM (CAFM) is practical, high-performance and easy-to-use software for all segments of real estate (e. g. if new incident reports are regularly coming in through the report inbox or work orders coming into the system). This means that the process lists displayed at that time are no longer up to date. For this reason, conjectFMFacilities Management with conjectFM (CAFM) is practical, high-performance and easy-to-use software for all segments of real estate provides a regular query of the datasets with the option “Automatic Update [Min.]” for every list in the workflow. In this way, you can always display the most current version of the opened process lists. (This function corresponds with a click on the button “Query Database”.)

And this is how it works:

Click in the list on the checkbox “Autom. Update [Min.]” to activate the automatic update of the displayed list.

You can enter any interval between 1 and 99 minutes. A comparison with the database will be carried out at the desired interval as long as the process list is open.

...conjectCMConstruction Cost with conjectCM the core processes in cost management are automated and standardized. All project data are available at any time. supports the newest GAEB XML Standard 3.1?

In cooperation with CITTI Handelsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG, conject is developing the new GAEB interface – with the aim of reducing the double time and effort spent in tendering. What could make more sense than to process the architect’s directory of services already available in electronic form in such a way that conjectCMConstruction Cost with conjectCM the core processes in cost management are automated and standardized. All project data are available at any time. can further use the data according to construction cost management criteria?

The GAEB data transfer is today standard in RFB and contract awards for construction services. The “Gemeinsame Ausschuss Elektronik im Bauwesen” (GAEB) supports for years the use of data processing in the construction industry taking the common language used by all involved in construction into consideration.

conject found support for the practice-oriented implementation in the person of Dipl.-Ing. Walter Nix. As a member of the task force of the 13-Program Systems of the GAEB Committees, he was able to put his many years' practical experience to use in the development.

The mode of operation in the GAEB interface includes reading and compressing all service items with the same DIN 276 classification to a service element in conjectCMConstruction Cost with conjectCM the core processes in cost management are automated and standardized. All project data are available at any time.. In addition to DIN 276, conjectCMConstruction Cost with conjectCM the core processes in cost management are automated and standardized. All project data are available at any time. supports any number of trade account systems/catalogs if they are used in the same form utilized at the time the directory of services was created.

The new GAEB interface differentiates between normal, required and alternative positions according to the totals by cost category. Both reductions in item levels as well as lump sum reductions on all possible title levels are taken into account using a complex algorithm for calculation and are apportioned by cost category in each respective ratio.

Using the GAEB viewer, the directory of services with a detailed description of services can also be opened directly from conjectCMConstruction Cost with conjectCM the core processes in cost management are automated and standardized. All project data are available at any time..

In order to display the tasks in conjectCMConstruction Cost with conjectCM the core processes in cost management are automated and standardized. All project data are available at any time. in step with actual practice, the planners were included in the construction cost management process of CITTI Handelsgesellschaft. conjectCMConstruction Cost with conjectCM the core processes in cost management are automated and standardized. All project data are available at any time.’s detailed rights concept enables selective approval of program segments and projects. This ensures that external companies, like project managers, only have access to documents for which they are explicitly authorized. This distributes tasks more widely, taking some of the burden off of users as well as increasing the level of quality.

Управление Жизненным Циклом Недвижимости – ILM in Russian

Falcon Flash: conject.com in russia

Yes, you read that right. That means “Infrastructure Lifecycle Management” which is explained on conject’s new Russian website, www.conject.com/ru, – in Russian, of course. “This topic is becoming increasingly important in Eastern Europe – you find construction going on everywhere, new buildings are going up all over the place,” says Olga Rimsky-Korsakova, Sales Manager at conject’s St. Petersburg office.

Often this is the case for major urban development projects, such as “New Karolina” in Ostrava or construction of the entirely new city of Aktau in Kazakhstan with over 40 million m² (see the article in the conject Falcon Flash from 12-2007).
“Whoever keeps the further commercial and sustainable use of the property in mind already in the planning and realization phase is practicing holistic Infrastructure Lifecycle Management,” Rimsky-Korsakova explains. And has found the right solution with conject.

Don’t let your investments get bogged down! – Come to the ILM 2008!

Falcon Flash: ILM conference 2008

Growth! The theme of this year’s Conference on Infrastructure Lifecycle Management (ILM) on 30th October 2008 at the Maritim-Hotel in Düsseldorf. The most important thing is to make use of the enormous potential added value in the German real estate economy. Two dozen speakers will discuss how to do this best - also beyond Germany’s borders and with the knowledge that only cooperation between all involved in real estate management can have a lasting and positive impact on the ability to compete.

Other topics: Which of the current trends are decisive for sustained construction, for example from an investors’ point of view? How can lifecycle costs be optimized? How can the real estate sector make a lasting contribution to finding solutions for relevant challenges such as internationalization, the change in demographics or the massive investment needs? As everyone knows, the construction sector is playing an even greater role particularly in emerging markets.

However, “money-grubbing” is at the same time beginning to ruin the market – a warning sign seized upon by Ruprecht Eser. A staff member of the German television station, ZDF, and head of the London studio until the middle of this year, he will be discussing growth prospects, with an eye on emerging markets, at the end of the conference with three other experts.

Prominent sponsor of this year’s conference is the Federation of German Industry (Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e.V). What else is new this year? A website with information on both the conference as well as ILM news: www.ilm-forum.com. Here you’ll find all information on the conference and you can also register online – prices for signing up early are valid until 09/09/2008.

“Like a gladiola blossom” – The Bridge Pavilion at the Expo 2008

Falcon Flash: The Bridge Pavilion
Source: Helene Binet

Until mid-September the city of Zaragoza in northern Spain is the site of the world exposition Expo 2008. This 275 meter long, habitable bridge construction, designed by Zaha Hadid, in conjunction with the engineers from Ove Arup in London, spans the Ebro River and connects the city with the 25-hectare Expo grounds. The so-called “Zaragoza Bridge Pavilion” serves at the same time as the gateway to the grounds and is the first pavilion of the exhibition. Diamond-shaped in their cross-section, four overlapping space frameworks span the unconventional shape of this pedestrian bridge. On the bank of the Expo area, the pavilion opens up “like a gladiola blossom,” according to the jury at the competition in 2005.

The organic design inspired by nature houses three exhibitions focusing on “Water and Sustainability,” the theme of the exhibition, on two floors and 7,000 m² of space. The facade consists of 29,000 diverse, triangular panels made of glass-fiber reinforced concrete, which form a structure in nine different gray shades like fish scales permeable to light and wind, causing the structure to shimmer over the water.

You will find further news on the real estate industry from industrieBau-online.
